ULAYU PINGWARTOK (PINGWARTUK; ULAYO; ULAYOO; OLAYOU; OOLAYOU; ULAYA) Born: 1904 Female E7-1038 Place of Birth: Eliviliktuk camp, near Lake Harbour Died: 1978 Resided: Cape Dorset Drawings, Prints, Sculpture "Ulayu Pingwartok, a Canadian Inuit graphic artist, was born near Lake Harbour on southwestern Baffin Island on April 7, 1904. She lived a traditional lifestyle on the land until her move into the settlement of Cape Dorset in 1959. Like many Cape Dorset Inuit, Ulayu was encouraged in the early 1960s to produce drawings for the annual print collections. She created drawings in various media until a year before her death in February 1978. Charming in their straightforward simplicity and descriptiveness, Ulayu's images are a testament to the aritist's keen observation of nature and domestic life. Many early prints are portraits of birds, with an emphasis on delineation of plumage. Her later prints generally depict traditional camp life, concentrating on the activities of women. An accomplished seamstress herself, Ulayu carefully rendered clothing patterns and styles. Shelter, in the form of summer tents and winter igloos, is another recurring theme."
